Dining Room Lighting Guide

Lighting above the dining table is more than a functional choice — it helps define the atmosphere of the entire room. It sets the mood for everyday meals, long conversations, and special occasions, while also highlighting the table as the natural centre of the space.

The key is to balance proportion, height, and the shape of the table to create a setup that feels both intentional and inviting.

Choosing the right lighting for your dining table

The number of pendants should always reflect the size and shape of the table:

  • Small round or square tables (up to 120 cm):
1 pendant, centered above the table

  • Round tables:
1 pendant is usually ideal, creating a soft, even glow and enhancing the natural symmetry of the shape

  • Rectangular tables (140–180 cm):
1 larger pendant or 2 smaller pendants spaced evenly

  • Long rectangular tables (180–240+ cm):
2–3 pendants or a linear pendant for balanced light distribution

  • Extra-long tables (250 cm+):
3+ pendants or a long linear fixture to ensure full coverage

As a general rule, pendants should always be centered over the table — not the room — and spaced evenly to create rhythm and visual balance.

Height and atmosphere

For the most comfortable result, pendants should hang approximately 55–70 cm above the tabletop. This height creates a sense of intimacy without blocking the view across the table or causing glare.

Consistency is especially important when using multiple pendants, as aligned heights help maintain a clean and harmonious look.

To complete the atmosphere, choose a warm light temperature (around 2700K–3000K), which enhances materials, softens shadows, and makes the dining space feel naturally inviting — from everyday use to evening gatherings.
