AndLight Guide to Light Sources

Find out everything you need to know when choosing a light source for your new designer lamps. We have created a simple guide to help you achieve the perfect light for your home.

Choosing the right light source can be challenging in a world of unfamiliar terms and technical jargon. This guide will help you make the right choice for your lamp, including what to consider when selecting a light source and what to look for in lamps with integrated LEDs.

Colour Temperature (Kelvin)

Kelvin describes whether the light feels warm or cool.

2200K = Extra warm, soft glow
Best for bedrooms and cosy spaces

2700K = Warm white light
Best for living rooms, dining areas and kitchens

3000K = Clearer white light
Best for bathrooms, offices and workspaces

Colour Rendering (CRI)

CRI shows how accurately colours appear under the light.

We recommend choosing bulbs with CRI 80 or above, especially for table lamps, floor lamps and reading areas.

Brightness (Lumen)

Lumen tells you how bright the bulb is.

400–500 lm = Table lamps, wall lamps
700–900 lm = Pendants, ceiling lamps, spotlights
1000+ lm = Larger rooms or task lighting

Which Bulb Should You Choose?

Many lamps use replaceable bulbs such as E14, E27 or GU10, while others include integrated LED.

We recommend LED bulbs for most homes thanks to their:

  • Low energy use

  • Long lifespan

  • Warm light options

  • Dimmable versions available

Final Tip: When choosing a light source, think about how the room is used. Warm light creates atmosphere, cooler light supports focus, and the right brightness ensures comfort. If in doubt, choose a dimmable LED bulb in 2700 Kelvin with high CRI — a safe choice for most homes.
