IP Ratings & Bathroom Lighting Guide

Choosing lighting for bathrooms and outdoor spaces is not only about design — it is also about safety. In areas exposed to moisture, it is important to choose lamps with the correct IP rating.

IP ratings show how well a lamp is protected against dust and water. The higher the rating, the more resistant the lamp is to humid or wet environments.

Below, we guide you through the most common IP ratings and where they are typically used.

Common IP Ratings:

IP20

For dry indoor areas such as living rooms and bedrooms.

IP44

Suitable for bathrooms and damp spaces. Protected against water splashes.

IP65

Suitable for outdoor use or wet bathroom areas. Protected against water jets.

IP68

Suitable for full water exposure or immersion.

Choosing Bathroom Lighting

For the best result, combine safety with the right light quality.

We recommend:

  • 2700K for a warm and relaxing atmosphere

  • 3000K for a brighter and more functional light

  • Mirror lighting with broad, shadow-free illumination

Bathroom Zones:

Zone 0

Inside the bathtub or shower tray, where the lamp may come into direct contact with water.

Recommended rating: IP67 or higher.

Only specially approved low-voltage fittings should be used in this zone.

Zone 1

The area directly above the bathtub or shower, where lamps may be exposed to splashes, steam and regular moisture. Recommended rating: IP44 or higher. For showers with heavy water exposure, IP65 is often a safer choice.

Zone 2

The area extending up to 60 cm around the bath, shower or sink.

Lamps in this zone should also be resistant to moisture and splashing water.

Recommended rating: IP44 or higher.

Outside the Zones

The remaining bathroom area, further away from direct water contact.

IP20 may be permitted in some cases, but due to humidity and condensation, we generally recommend IP44 for better long-term durability.

Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lamps are exposed to rain, dust and changing weather.

For most outdoor walls, entrances and terraces, IP65 is a reliable choice.

Our Recommendation: If you are unsure which IP rating you need, choose a higher level of protection and consult a qualified electrician before installation.
